This is a soft and brittle rare earth alloy that is not available in its pure form. Though it is possible to get 99.99% purity. The toughness, ductility, strength and conductivity properties tend to change due to the lattice defects and microstructural inclusions created by the impurities.

• It is used in metal hydride technology-based batteries.
• It is used as a spark source for initializing fires and flames.
• It is used for improving castability and mechanical properties in several alloys by manufacturers of steel and non-ferrous metals.
• It is used as an alloying additive in ductile iron foundry.
